This calculator connects a birth date to a Major Arcana number through simple digit reduction. The arithmetic is intentionally visible, so you can follow every step.

What is a Tarot Birth Card?

A Tarot Birth Card is a symbolic card association derived from a person’s birth date. Readers use it as a lens for reflection, storytelling, or journaling—not as a fixed definition of a person.

What is the Major Arcana?

The Major Arcana is the 22-card part of a Tarot deck numbered from 0 to 21. Its cards are commonly read as broad themes, archetypal images, and stages of experience.

Our calculation method

  1. 1Use the numeric month, day, and full four-digit year. For March 21, 1985, the starting calculation is 3 + 21 + 1985 = 2009.
  2. 2If the total is greater than 22, add its digits once: 2 + 0 + 0 + 9 = 11.
  3. 3If necessary, continue reducing the digits until the result is between 1 and 22. A result of 22 is treated as The Fool, whose RWS page number is 0.
  4. 4Match the final number to the Rider-Waite-Smith style Major Arcana numbering used here: 8 is Strength, 11 is Justice, and 22 is the special Fool alias.

Numbering traditions differ

This site uses Rider-Waite-Smith style numbering, where Strength is VIII (8) and Justice is XI (11). Different Tarot traditions may use different numbering conventions and calculation methods, so another system may produce a different result.

A note about Tarot traditions

There is no single universal Tarot Birth Card calculation. Some systems use a different order of operations, preserve compound numbers, or interpret two related cards together. We use the method above because it is easy to explain and reproduce. Different results do not mean one tradition is “wrong”; they reflect different symbolic frameworks.
